Abstract

The text addresses the black cultural heritage constituted by the ritualistic practices of the terraces and communities of Umbanda in the city of Bagé (RS), located on the southern border of Brazil and Uruguay. The objective of this work is to demarcatise these practices as decolonial production of ways of existing and resisting created by afro-riograndense populations in the gaucho campaign region, which maintain strong cultural traits of the eurocentric and christian tradition. The methodology of the study was based on a descriptive documentary research, having as empirical material newspapers of the Spiritist Association of Umbanda de Bagé and photographic images that depict the festivals of Iemanjá and Ogum celebrated annually. It is understood that the ritualistic umbandistas make up a rich black cultural heritage, signaling the creation of an art of existence and resistance to colonialism. It is essential, therefore, to highlight the affirmation of the ways of life, thoughts and beliefs cultivated in this context, since they potentiate the production of an anti-racist education to be forged in school and academic curricula.
