Abstract

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the importance of municipal ecological parks and biodiversity for sustainable urban development. It is justified by the fact that municipal ecological parks are fundamental spaces in urban areas, because in addition to promoting people's health and well-being, they allow direct contact with nature. The methodology consisted of the exploratory-qualitative method with the adoption of in-depth interviews and observation as instruments used for data collection, which verified the relevance of municipal ecological parks and sustainable urban development; detailed field survey in the municipal ecological park of Island of Mozambique, as well as the study of public documents that address the topic. The research was based on the question: what is the importance of municipal ecological parks for sustainable urban development in Mozambique? The results show that parks, when well structured, are indicators of quality of life, as they are linked to leisure, recreation and the practice of physical activities, not only because they constitute places for social interaction but also because they allow the preservation and conservation of natural heritage. As catalysts for sustainable urban development, parks, when in poor conservation conditions, can pose serious environmental risks and damage to the population. The protection and preservation of species, flora and fauna and the wetlands that the island's ecological park has is recommended so that present and future generations can enjoy contributing to sustainable urban use and development.
