Abstract

In this research, we analyzed the socioeconomic profile of students in the Administration, Accounting Sciences and Economics courses at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, UFRJ, in 2019. The data used for this purpose were extracted from the socioeconomic questionnaire given to the undergraduate student. It was necessary to apply 160 (one hundred and sixty) questionnaires throughout the period, in order to know the socioeconomic profile. The variables: gender, age, marital status, type of school, residence, means of transportation, parents' occupation, level of education and income of parents, participation in the family economy and number of children in the family. In order to respond to the general and specific objectives of the research, a quantitative approach was used, with probabilistic sampling. The results showed, in general, that the majority of students are male, single and up to 20 years old, with religion, income below 6 mw, high school education in the public network, parents have higher education and receive a scholarship or do an internship. The data show that the defense of free, high-quality public higher education in Brazil is legitimate, due to the democratic guarantee it offers for the expansion of knowledge. Higher education plays a strategic role in the future of the country's society. Finally, understanding the configurations in which students experience their processes can indicate inexhaustible paths to understanding their ways of life, the doubts they face in their social contexts, and contribute to the formulation of educational policies and practices that are more appropriate for the diverse audiences of young people at the University.
