Becoming a black physician: curriculum and racism in medical training

This article is a product of the research Becoming a Black Physician: Students' Views on the Curriculum in Undergraduate Courses at the Public Universities of Pernambuco, conducted at the Department of Anthropology and Museology at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE). The research investigates students' perceptions of the medical curriculum at their universities and highlights the main challenges faced throughout the medical training process. Thus, the article highlights important elements of this process, tracing the origins of medicine in Brazil and its teaching model centered on Eurocentric epistemologies; presenting a survey of data regarding the presence of Black people in medical courses; exploring students’ views on the curricular structure; and addressing the challenges faced in the training process, highlighting their narratives and the elements present in their racial identities as they confront racism in a predominantly white teaching field.
