Universities can be understood as organizations that have administrative structures, goals to achieve, and resources to manage. The concept of organizational culture is present in the vast majority of organizations, but it is still not widely studied from the perspective of universities. Considering this research gap, this article aimed to understand how the scientific literature has shown the development of the organizational culture of higher education institutions. To this end, an integrative review was adopted using the Web of Science platform. The results showed that the organizational culture assessment instrument (OCAI) is the most widely used method for researching organizational culture in universities. The individual aspects of each institution will support the development of the type of culture that stands out, allowing the identification of the characteristics of each culture, understanding the relationship that employees have with the culture and how it affects the daily life of the university and the performance of professors in this context. In addition, organizational culture also influences the values of the organization and its employees, the rules and norms established by its leaders, and the traditions that were created and are followed by its employees over time.
