The article explores the relationship between individualism and accessibility in urban spaces, focusing on the sidewalks of Cuiabá. The study examines how the improper appropriation of sidewalks for private purposes reflects individualistic thinking and negatively impacts the mobility and safety of people with reduced mobility and women, especially those involved in caregiving work. The analysis reviews the literature on individualism, highlighting authors like Byung-Chul Han and Zygmunt Bauman, and addresses gender issues in urbanism, with reference to Leslie Kern. The field research records examples of sidewalks improperly appropriated, hindering the safe passage of pedestrians. The article points out that neglecting accessibility and lacking collective awareness represent significant challenges for women’s lives in urban spaces and offers recommendations for public policies and future research on the topic.
